Common audiovisual terms explained

Conventional light

Conventional lamps are unchangeable lights that can either be used to wash the stage - providing even lighting coverage throughout the set - or to provide specific headlights and color changes to the stage or background.

Moving light

Fluorescent lamps are very versatile and automated. They are usually preprogrammed to move and change color and design based on certain signals or commands throughout the presentation, and can be used by itself or in combination with traditional lights.

Truss

A truss structure consists of transverse bars that support a variety of audio, video and lighting components. Screen savers can be clamped to the wooden pole in many positions vertically or horizontally depending on the audience direction. Both conventional and moving lamps can be clamped to the truss structure in any way needed to get the desired effects.

Audio Mixing Console / Soundboard / Mixing Board

A mixer console is used to control incoming audio sources before the audio is output through the speakers. It allows audio engineers to adjust the speaker volume, tweeter and bass so that the sound coming from the speakers is heard by everyone in the audience, not downgraded or fed back, for example. Mixing cards come in different sizes. The more audio sources that need to be amplified, the more channels are needed.

Dubbelpolstativ

Dual Pole Stands enable an AV technician to mount plasma TV screens as well as other visual displays. These types of stands are adjustable, so AV technicians can mount the screen at any height needed for the audience to see the pictures. They either have a flat base, which is useful for an immobile setup or a base of wheels that allow movement to any location without having to re-mount the monitor. Type of event will determine whether a flat or wheelbase is used.

Quick Folding Screens

These are projector screens that have a large folding frame that makes it easy and easy to install and tear for an AV technology. They are usually used in larger rooms where a normal screen would be too small, such as a banquet room or convention center.

Dress

Dresses are used in combination with fast-dial projector screens and add optional drapes to the left, right, top and bottom, filling empty space around the projector screen and hiding a wider area behind it to remain invisible to the audience.

displays

Plasma and LCD monitors are used to display the visual aspects of a presentation or event. They connect and use visual data from cameras, DVD players, computers, laptops and other video sources, and are placed in strategic locations that ensure that each member of the audience can see them.

advancers

A advancer is an important tool for a presenter so that he or she can wirelessly forward the visual presentation to the next image without having to interact with the computer. This ensures the presenters mobility and thus adds to the overall quality of the presentation. Many developers also contain a laser pointer function, which is helpful if the presenter can not be near the screen.

Trust Monitor

This is a display screen facing the audience and visible to the presenter. It acts as a tool that allows presenters to see themselves while presenting. These displays can also be used to switch between the presenter, the presentation script, the notes, and the live video feed, depending on what the presenter needs at any time.

Strike / Distribution

A Strike / Breakdown occurs at the end of each event, after the technicians deliver, set up and use the equipment at their customers event. Striking is industry hose to unpack all AV equipment, take down the seat, cover cables and return it to the warehouse. Ideally, the site will be left in the same state as before the AV provider arrived.

HD projectors compared to standard projectors

Compared with standard projectors, HD (High Definition) projectors have a higher resolution. The pixels of pixels are scanning lines, which represent resolution for vertically and horizontally. The 720p, for example, has 720 lines vertically from the top to the bottom of the screen. A 16: 9 widescreen aspect would cause left to right scan lines to add 1280. This would make it a 1280 x 720 resolution.

lichen

Low is short for lavalies, as are small rock microphones that can be attached to the presenter or subject matter close to the mouth, such as the collar of a jacket. They allow the presenter to move freely about the scene without having to hold on to a microphone or be bound to a stage. A lid is usually connected to a wireless package that sends the presenters audio sound through the sound card to the speaker system.
